Teaching IT: connecting concepts with practical needs
Technical teaching is clearer when concepts are connected to professional situations.
Explain the purpose
A directory service, monitoring tool or CI/CD pipeline meets a need. Explaining that need gives students a starting point before looking at components and technical steps.
This context helps connect topics, rather than presenting a series of unrelated tools.
Adapt the level of detail
I taught at Supinfo and later at École IT, including in Valenciennes and Brussels. At École IT, courses covered years 1 to 5 of higher education.
This means taking existing knowledge into account. A topic can start with basic principles, then move into architecture, operations and limitations.
Connect technology and communication
My courses covered Windows Server, Linux, high availability, Centreon and CI/CD pipelines, as well as business communication, management and law.
Technical work happens within a team. Explaining an incident, recording a decision and presenting a project are also part of IT work.
Use documentation to share knowledge
Useful documentation explains the context, expected behaviour and checks to carry out. It helps readers understand decisions and continue the work.
This focus on sharing knowledge connects my roles as an instructor, systems engineer and consultant.
